These etudes are from a larger suite of material dedicated to the study & practice of generative composition. At the onset of 2022, following my previous releases “Voltage Scores” & “impromptus in isolation”, I had a hankering to focus exclusively on generative composition in the hardware domain. Those previous albums featured self-playing works and others that merged improvisation with the algorithmic, and I found myself wishing to hunker down and see what else was possible.
So, immediately following new year's day 2022, I gave myself an assignment with the following rules: create one work / patch per day for 30 days (not consecutively due to other obligations), restrict my focus as much as possible to generative processes, each piece must start and stop itself (no human interaction), record at least 5 takes of each patch, only use my modular synthesizer (no help from other tools or computers), no overdubs, & no editing.
The second volume features the same etudes across three EPs (Vol 2.0, 2.1, 2.2) but with different takes of the generative patches running. Generative Etudes Vol 2.0 was released by SØVN records, based in Torino, Italy, on Dec 1, 2023. The first volume is out in full, with its first edition, Vol 1.0, released by dingn\dents based in Seoul, Korea. The full suite consists of 9 releases, three labels (plus my self-released editions), and 3 formats.
Volume 2 is the more rhythmic, percussive, and erratic of the three. As SØVN records describes, “The music of Generative Etudes Vol 2.0 is made of percussive surprises and unexpectedly playful chopped-up synths. Matthew's rules, as interpreted by the machines, produce fast, unpredictable changes in timbre and rhythm at every corner. The resulting excitement is not unlike the one we experience when visiting a new place - or perhaps, when discovering a new possible world: with a brief glimpse of the infinite intricacy behind its rules that will remain unknown to us, we are pushed to reconsider the rules of our own real world.”

I highly recommend checking out Maria's work. Much of it is improvised Buchla recordings. She has a unique voice and the work is intricate yet playful. Looking forward to future releases. Matthew Ryals
I place all of Keith Fullerton Whitman's work in high regard, and recommend this particular release since all the pieces are generative modular works, which might appeal to my listeners. Matthew Ryals

as a fan of generative art myself, fields is one of my fav artists of all time. have listened to everything he has output (including his 24hr seminal masterpiece fieldOS). his process and technique for making very meaningful random generative music makes each listen all the more intriguing and inspiring. offthesky
